“Things will work more quickly if we use numbers rather than words.”
Because our school server is not directly attached to the Internet (it is a couple of networks removed from our ISP’s gateway to the Internet) things can get a little bit slow when we make them visible from outside the school.
You may have experienced this with slow server response times in class. This is because “wordpress.melba.vic.edu.au” is
an Internet address that needs to be looked up on an Internet service called DNS – to simply come back to the school, where we already are!
The internal number (IP address) of our server is 10.132.232.96. Replace the address in the quotes above with these numbers in your dashboard settings (Settings – General) as shown in the clickable picture. I think you’ll be quite surprised at how quickly everything then works.
The downside of this is that with NUMBERS set – your site will not function outside the school. If you forget to change back to the words and go home your site will not function properly for you from home if you choose to do some extra work.
Please feel free to change this setting but make sure you change it back anytime you are asked to (for assessment) as I do most of these assessments from home.
If this change makes no difference to you please let me know. If that is the case across the class we will go back to simply using the words and forget that this post ever existed!
